Tennis: Asian Grand Slam?By Patwant Singh | Posted: 04 June 2011 2108 hrs FRANCE: Former tennis men's singles world number one Andre Agassi said it would be great for Asia to have its own Grand Slam Tournament. But the American, who retired in 2006, said it would be tough as it would break with the current tradition of the four Grand Slams - namely the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open."If (you) put history aside, (it's) great to see a Grand Slam in Asia," Agassi said on the sidelines of the French Open, where the Tennis Great is attending the Longines Future Tennis Aces Tournament as the brand's ambassador."But how do you put aside history? It is not an easy thing to do."Statistics are so important in sports. If you change the opportunity to win Grand Slams, you are saying 'no longer the statistics matter', you are changing the sport."Should the sport change? Maybe, but you have to understand what you are doing".The 41 year old said if increasing the Grand Slams to five is not possible, perhaps, one way is to drop one of the current Grand Slams.Despite the challengers, advocates of the idea feel that many Asian countries like China or Korea would be ideal venues, to host a Grand Slam in Asia.Another boost for a tennis Grand Slam in Asia is the growing sponsorship dollar being poured into the sport in the continent.-CNA/wk
