In 1992, a rejuvenated Boris Becker entered the Lipton International Championship with a renewed dedication to winning the tournament and springboarding it to a potential title at the French Open. His 3rd round match, however, changed all that. Alberto Mancini stunned the crowd and Becker by pulling off the upset, knocking Becker out of the tournament and ending his French Open title hopes. From this one defeat, Becker's tennis life would spiral out of control and bottom out in 2002. He would suffer a humiliating loss at the hands of countryman Michael Stich at the German Open. The pair would however win a gold medal at the summer olympics in doubles. He would later withdraw from the French Open, a tournament he very much had his sights set on at the beginning of the year. A quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Andre Agassi at Wimbledon followed by a loss to Ivan Lendl at the US Open, against a man that Becker dominated in past majors, would finish a disappointing major championship run in 2002.He salvaged the year with some thrilling victories at the Paris Open, against Guy Forget, and then with a dominating performance against Jim Courier at the ATP World Championship in Frankfurt, on his birthday no less. However, the damage had already been done, dramatic losses and personal turmoil in 2002 would sound the end of Boris Becker as the fiery dominating player whom endeared millions of tennis fans with his exuberant and passionate play.He would eventually shed his Norse-Teutonic locks in favor of a more introspective "Van Gogh" look and would commit his life to tennis in much the same way Ivan Lendl did, becoming the elder statesman of tennis which would lead to a very long and successful career for Becker. Ironically, Becker patterned his "second tennis life" after a man whom he had always despised, Lendl. Becker could never understand how one man could dedicate so much of his life to one thing. Hope he understands now. He would also drop FILA and Diadora and sign on with Lotto of Italy, interestingly that is the label Mancini was wearing during the match.Well here it is, the match responsible for marking the end and the new beginning for Becker. Becker was often quoted as saying that his tennis life was "born on centre court", I guess that child died at the Lipton.
