This 4th round match between Ivan Lendl and Boris Becker turned out to be a real "clash of the titans". Neither player came into this event showcasing the same level of tennis they displayed during the 1989 US Open final, Lendl nearing the end of his illustrious career while Becker enduring a mid-career slump and questioning is motivation to continue playing tennis. The year of personal turmoil took its toll on Becker allowing Lendl to outlast Becker in this thrilling 5-hour 5-set match which finally ended at 1AM the next day. The match ended Becker's horrendous grand slam showing while Lendl went on to lose to Stefan Edberg in the quarterfinals. Becker previously owned a stellar 5-0 record versus Lendl in major championships. Becker would salvage the year with victories at the Paris Open and at the ATP World Championship in Frankfurt.
