Before he was known as "The Mighty Federer," the young Swiss prodigy Roger Federer was known in tennis circles simply as "Le Petit Pete" for his striking resemblance to the great American champion Pete Sampras. Early in Federer's professional career, the resemblance was uncanny: proficiency from the baseline and at the net. Fluid, simple technique and marvelous athleticism. Deft hands and sharp mind. Beautiful service action and crisp groundstrokes. One-handed backhand with both slice and drive. Federer resembled a young Pete Sampras, so it was considered an early indicator of Federer's future stardom that he was able to defeat Sampras in their first, and only, match -- a fourth-round encounter on Wimbledon's Centre Court in June 2001. This is the match directly following Federer's historic triumph--a four-set quarterfinal loss to English No. 1 Tim Henman.
