There have been quite a few posts requesting an example of a term I mentioned and briefly discussed on a Federer Fundamentals article regarding David Nalbandian and "contra-tennis." At its most primitive, contra-tennis is simply good tennis. By that I mean, high-percentage, high-margin tennis which employs controlled aggression and solid tactics. Furthermore, "Contra" tennis means never "fighting" the ball, but rather accepting and redirecting it -- using the opponent's pace and position against him. It is predicated on a tennis player's intuitive understanding of the game and his ability to manipulate time and space. All great players have this capacity to a high degree, save the possible exception of Andy Roddick (just kidding), but David Nalbandian and Roger Federer are two of the foremost practitioners of this highly refined form of tennis. Enjoy the Nalbandian clip, and as ever, feel free to leave comments and questions!* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *For more from the premier resource solely devoted to decoding and appreciating the Federer style, visit http://federerfundamentals.wordpress.com (more)
