Here's a rarely-seen shot from Roger Federer's endless bag of tricks: the drop approach shot. You won't see this shot in any match that Federer plays unless the score is absolutely lopsided and Federer has opened up his game because, as they say, this is not a "bread-and-butter" (or in Andre Agassi parlance, "meat-and-potatoes") shot. This is a shot that requires extreme skill because it demands exactness in timing, precision, disguise, and most of all, confidence. You have practically no margin for error on this shot because the angle at which you have to cut the ball while it's at your feet and you are on the dead run is so severe that unless you are fully trusting of your ability to pull this shot off, you will end up looking quite foolish. If you watch carefully, the angle of approach on the ball is something like 75 to 80 degrees. And unfortunately for you viewers, I didn't capture this adequately, but the ball ended up hitting the net while spinning back. Insane.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * For more from the premier resource solely devoted to decoding and appreciating the Federer style, visit http://federerfundamentals.wordpress.com
