This is a classic example of TMF's elegant point construction. Even though he misses the final blow, the way he structured the point to get to the forehand volley is beautiful and instructive. The down-the-line forehand from TMF (shot no. 10) draws a crosscourt slice from Safin, which leads to TMF's next shot--the key to the entire shot sequence--as TMF cleverly takes the pace off the ball and goes back behind Safin, playing the soft angle with a crosscourt looping backhand against Safin's center of balance, and drawing another slice with Safin's court position exposed. Next, instead of giving Safin a look at a running forehand, TMF pins Safin behind the baseline with an exquisite crosscourt slice approach. This is in itself slightly unorthodox because from the start tennis players are taught, as a general rule, not to approach crosscourt as it opens the court for the passer. However, the exception is when you can pin your opponent, as TMF does here. The pin comes from hitting the approach in such a way as to kill Safin's footwork rhythm, as Safin has to shift his momentum and take time to reshuffle his feet, which in turn buys TMF just enough time to properly and effectively cut off the passing angles.TMF's angle of approach in combination with his increased net coverage forces Safin to take the down-the-line pass, which TMF anticipates and cuts off with authority. To say that TMF misses here is to lose sight of the point -- this is a 95 out of 100 proposition for a player of TMF's caliber. It is the setup of the point itself that makes this clip an example of Federer style.
