NOVAK Djokovic's stunning Australian Open is complete after his thrashing of close friend Andy Murray in Melbourne last night earned him a second grand slam title. When the Serbian, who triumphed 6-4 6-2 6-3, claimed the 2008 Australian Open over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, he confidently asserted his belief that the title of the world's best player was there for the taking.Djokovic has been more circumspect this time around - he still sits some way behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer on rankings - but there can now be no denying his championship credentials. He is certain this will fuel his confidence."Certainly this will give me a lot of motivation and concentration for the rest of the season," he said."Winning a grand slam first up is the best thing you can do. This was a great match from the start to the last point.End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar."I feel like I am a better player to three years ago because I feel I am faster, stronger and mentally I am more motivated on the court."Nor will any question his charisma after one of the more memorable victory celebrations.Last month the 23-year-old led his team to its maiden Davis Cup triumph and the team was feted in Belgrade's city centre in a massive celebration. It has been a lengthy festive season for the Serb. Last night's joy was individual and what a party it was. After hugging Murray at the net, Djokovic tossed his racquet into the crowd. He then high-fived his team and continued to strip down. First went the shirt, then followed his shoes, all souvenirs of the sweatiest kind launched into an adoring crowd. The party in Belgrade lasted for 48 hours, this could be longer."Much more. Much much more," Djokovic said.In the months following Nadal's triumph over Djokovic in a marvellous US Open final, officials had hoped this final might pit the Spaniard chasing a "Rafa Slam" against the defending champion and arguably greatest there is in Federer. When that did not eventuate, it was hoped the final between two great mates - the finalists played doubles together on their first visit to Melbourne in 2006 - and the leaders of the next generation would culminate in a classic. For much of the first set, it seemed possible as both players settled well. But it was following a brilliant point on Murray's serve in the 10th game that Djokovic seized the momentum. With the Scot under pressure at 15-30 but the match still in the balance, the pair slugged it out from the baseline but it was Djokovic's renowned movement that initially kept him in the point and then allowed him to win it.First came a slide made famous by Kim Clijsters out wide to retrieve a ball that would be a winner against many others, then a foray to the net to force Murray into error. As the Scot said after the match, Djokovic has an incredible ability to cover the court."He always moves great," Murray said. "I think at 5-4 in the first set we had another unbelievable point at 15-30. You know, he did some unbelievable retrieving in that point."When Murray's challenge on a ball that fell just long was unsuccessful, the set was gone. Few, though, would have expected that it would basically decide the match too, given it was a testing set lasting 59 minutes. From there it became almost anti-climactic and sometimes painful to watch, such was the stress Murray seemed to be under. He later denied being troubled by a thigh problem sustained in his semi-final win over David Ferrer. But he played below the form that carried him to the final and it continues his wretched run in major finals. From three attempts, he is yet to win a set.His first loss in a major final came at the hands of Federer in New York in 2008, with the Scot admitting later he was overcome by the occasion in that match. He fared better against Federer only in terms of pride in Melbourne last year and while he did not win a set he at least pushed the Swiss champion at times.Last night, though, saw a mid-match meltdown. There is one game in particular the 23-year-old will never want to watch again, the dispiriting effort at 3-0 in the second where a string of errors - some missing by several metres - conceded another break and effectively the match."I had a tough match in the semi," Murray said."I moved very well the whole tournament (but) I felt like I could have moved a bit better tonight and against someone like Novak, you need to be firing on all cylinders."www.theaustralian.com
