Climax to the 1981 Wimbledon. Bjorn Borg had won the previous five Wimbledons, including the one the previous year where he had defeated the young 21 year old John McEnroe. Bjorn was still only 26 years of age, and the number one player, having also won The French Open six times. John triumphed in this match deservedly, it was John's first ever Grand Slam win but it was a tough fight and Borg displayed some incredible skills and strategy. I have the utmost admiration for him. Sometimes when you are rooting for one player, like I was for John in 1981, you do not appreciate the skill of the other player, it is only when looking back can you truly appreciate what a genius Bjorn was, with a totally admirable character. John became the number one player and amazed us all with his varying style of play, his soft touches at the net, his incredible lobs, his powerful serve, he took chances like no other, hitting the ball incredibly close to the line, he was awe inspiring and I hope to compile a video soon of some of his incredible shots so we can all appreciate just what a genius he is. Borg chose to retire early after his defeat to John McEnroe, he recognised John as being the new number one, and he wanted people to remember him for being a top ranked player. You can still see John and Bjorn playing on the Black Rock Champions Tour, and their play is still awe inspiring.
