J. Abels competed in the 2007 Senior Olympics, held June 22 through July 7 in Louisville, KY. In the 4th of July race, Abels won the silver medal in the men's age 60-64 800m dash with a time of 2:30.74, and finished 11th out of 50 in the 400m dash with a time of 64.37. Both of his times qualified him as an All-American, meeting a high national standard. Abels is currently ranked in the top 25 in the nation in both the 400m dash and the 800m dash for his age division. The Senior Olympics are held biannually. This year over 12,000 individuals, age 50 and over, competed in 18 events, including team sports such as basketball, volleyball and softball, as well as archery, 5k and 10k road racing, swimming, tennis, track and field, and many more. In order to qualify for this national event, contestants had to win 1st or 2nd in their state Senior Olympic games, or attain All-American standing for their age division.
